Goal of the courseGraduate course on Semiconductor fundamentals with emphasis on optical properties from both the optoelectronic applications and optical spectroscopy points of view. Prerequisites are an introductory course in Semiconductor Physics or in Solid State Physics. (Φ-441 in the Physics Department of the University of Crete). The students actively participate in the presentation and discussion of various topics and develop during the semester their own numerical calculation routines for various purposes in the programming environment of their choice (e.g MATHEMATICA, MATLAB or even EXCEL)
SyllabusShort overview of the electronic structure and properties of semicondutors. Fundamental absorption in direct and indirect gap semiconductors, Fermi Golden Rule, transition matrix elements and Joint Density of States. The dielectric function. Krammers-Kroning relations. Excitons, Exciton-Polaritons, Phonon Polaritons. Modulation spectroscopy. Spontaneous and stimulated light emission from semiconductors. Emission Spectroscopies. Light scattering spectroscopies.
