Goal of the courseThis is a graduate level course designed to present the physics and unique characteristics of two dimensional semiconductors. Material growth, processing of devices and their design logic which differs from their three dimensional counterparts will be presented. The course will focus on describing basic opto-electornic and electronic properties of 2D based devices and their operation. The aim is to set a the foundation in knowledge to further work and study two dimensional semiconductors.
Syllabus1) Structure of layered materials
- Structure and fundamental physics of graphene
- Structure and fundamental physics of transition metal dichalcogenides
2) Growth / fabrication of 2D materials
- Growth techniques (ex-foliation, chemical vapour deposition, epitaxy)
- Creating and Controlling doping levels
- Heterostructures
3) Fundamental principles of devices
- Contacts (Ohmic and Schottky)
- Isolation, dielectric deposition
- Examples of typical devices (Transistor, diodes e.t.c)
- Non conventional devices (ballistic devices)
