Goal of the courseThe course is addressed to graduate students, and provides a general overview of the field of Optoelectronics with an in-depth introduction to the principles of operation of the most characteristic and exciting optoelectronic device, which is the laser diode. Particular emphasis is given to solving problems of practical interest, often with the help of a computer. Recommended prior knowledge is a course such as Introduction to Condensed Matter Physics (Φ- 441), or equivalent.
SyllabusReview on semiconductor optical properties, quantum wells, and waveguides.
Overview of laser diodes and other optoelectronic devices.
Principles of operation of laser diodes.
Mirrors and cavities for laser diodes.
Optical gain in quantum wells.
Tunable laser diodes.
