Goal of the courseThe course is addressed to senior physics students. It covers a wide range of topics of the physical properties associated with moving charged particles and their applications. A strong background in electromagnetism is essential.
Syllabus1. Dynamics of charged marticles in electric and magnetic fields.
2. Optics of charged particles: Electrostatic lenses, magnetic lenses, strong focusing and applications in: electron microscope, mass spectroscopy, isotope separation.
3. Relativistic dynamics of charged particles
4. Linear accelerators: Principles of operation and construction.
5. Circular accelerators: Principles of operation and construction: cyclotron, betatron, microtron, synchrotron.
6. Oscilations and instabilities in the motion
7. Synchrotron radiation
8. Technology of pulse power systems
