  • International Particle Physics Masterclasses

The "International Particle Physics Masterclasses" are organized by the Technical University of Dresden (TU Dresden) in collaboration with the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG). They offer an opportunity for high school students to get acquainted with Particle Physics. They take place in more than 200 locations in 42 countries, with over 10,000 students. In Greece, the Universities of Crete, Athens and Thessaloniki, NCSR "Demokritos" and the National Technical University of Athens participate. The "International Particle Physics Masterclasses" 2019 at the Department of Physics of the University of Crete will take place on Saturday, April 6. • Selection of students of the Department of Physics for participation in the 69th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting

Every year, more than 30 Nobel Laureates convene in the town of Lindau in Germany to meet 500-600 young scientists (under and post-graduate students, as well as PhD candidates in order to exchange knowledge, ideas and experience. This year's 69th Lindau Nobel Laureate meeting is dedicated to Physics. Already 41 Nobel Laureates have confirmed their membership as well as 580 young scientists from 88 countries. The Physics Department congratulates its graduate student A. Tsouros and its PhD candidate A. Pavli for their considerable success to be selected and admitted to participate in this year's conference in Lindau. We also note the selection of Mr. T. Ilias and I. Matheakakis, graduates of the Department who continue their studies as a doctoral candidates at the Universities of Ulm and Wurzburg (in Germany), respectively. A total of four of the eight Greek students admitted to the 69th Nobel Laureate meeting either attend or have graduated from the Department of Physics. Given the particularly high level of young scientists world-wide applying at these conferences, this year's attendance rate is extremely important and a source of a great pleasure to us.

  • The Department of Physics celebrates its 40th anniversary

September 2018 marks 40 years since the first courses in Physics at the then "School of Physics and Mathematics" of the University of Crete, in the buildings of the Technical School of Nea Alikarnassos (in Heraklion). In the first year, 65 students were enrolled in the Physics "Division" of the School. The Department of Physics decided to celebrate the occasion with various events during 2018. The Department is very pleased, and proud, that a relatively large number of its graduates follow a successful research career in Greece and abroad. Throughout 2018 we will organize an "anniversary" series of seminars that will be given by former graduates of the Department who hold positions in Universities and Research Institutes in Greece (outside Heraklio) and abroad. The current list of the "Anniversary Seminars for the 40 Years of the Physics Department" is available here.

  • External Evaluation of the Department of Physics 2008

Recent legislation regarding the higher education in Greece, which was approved by the Greek Parliament in 2007, lead to the creation of a new independent Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education. The principal goal of this Agency is to organize and supervise the process of the academic evaluation of all Departments in Universities and Technical Educational Institutes in Greece.

The Department of Physics of the University of Crete, ever since its creation 30 years ago, was a proponent of the evaluation of its educational and research activities. Since the last evaluation of our Department, which took place almost a decade ago as a result of our own initiative, we were very interested to respond to the call of QAA and become one of the first departments in the country, which were evaluated at the end of 2008, using the new legislation.

The whole process commenced in January 2008 when the department formed a committee, whose goal was to collect all necessary material and prepare an internal evaluation report. This report was submitted to QAA in June 2008. QAA selected independently a committee of five well respected greek speaking physicists affiliated with academic institutions outside Greece, who studied the report and visited the Department for three days at end of November 2008. During their visit they discussed with faculty, research staff, support personnel and students and examined all academic and research infrastructures of the Department. Using all this information they prepared their evaluation report, which they submitted to QAA. This report was formally communicated to the Department Physics by QAA in January 2009.

All materials and reports which resulted from this process are available here:

    • Appendixes of Internal Evaluation Report:
      - Brief CVs of all Faculty Members (in greek) [PDF file]
      - Refereed Publications of all Faculty for the Period 2002-2007 (in greek) [PDF file]
      - Program of Undergraduate Studies (in greek) [PDF file]
      - Program of Grgraduate Studies (in greek) [PDF file]
    • Brief Presentation of Department of Physics - [PPT file]
    • External Evaluation Report of QAA (in english) [PDF file]

It is evident from the evaluation report submitted to QAA, that the opinion of the external examiners about the education and research activities of the Department of Physics of the University of Crete is very positive. Our Department is very pleased with the whole process. We are committed to continue our tradition of excellence in all aspects of research and education, in order to maintain our leading role in Physics in Greece.
