Joseph Ventura obtained his Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens in 1962, his M.Sc. in Physics from the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel) in 1966 and his PhD in Theoretical Physics in 1975 from the City University of New York (USA). His academic genealogy tree is here.
During the period of 1975-1980 he was a Research Associate at the Universities of Koln and Hamburg as well as in the Max Planck Institut fur Extraterrestrische Physik (MPE) in Garching (Germany). From 1981 until 1983 he was visiting researcher at the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris (France) and Universitat Tubigen (Germany). Since 1983 he is a faculty member of the Physics department of the University of Crete and an associate researcher with the MPE/Garching and the Foundation of Research and Technology- Hellas (FORTH). He retired and was elected Emeritus Professor in 2006. He passed away after a brief illness on October 5, 2020.
High energy astrophysics, physics of strong magnetic fields, pulsars and magnetized neutron stars, X-ray pulsars, emission mechanisms and radiative transfer in astrophysical plasmas, gamma ray bursts.
