Lefteris Economou obtained his Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens in 1963 and his PhD in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics from the Univ. of Chicago (USA) in 1969.
He was Professor at the Univ. of Virginia, USA (1970-1981), as well as Professor and Chair of Theoretical Physics at the Univ. of Athens, Greece (1978-1981) before he joined the Univ. of Crete in 1981. Until 2004 he was the Director General and Chairman of the Governing Board of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH). He retired and was elected Emeritus Professor in 2007.
Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics, wave propagation in complex media, such as photonic and phononic crystals, left-handed materials, localization theory and amorphous semiconductors.
