Christoforos Moutafis obtained his BSc in Physics from the University of Crete in 2003 and his PhD in Physics from the University of Cambridge (UK) in 2009. His academic genealogy tree is available here.
He has held academic appointments at the University of Manchester since 2015, first as a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer and subsequently as a Reader (from 2024). He was a Senior Fellow (04/2025–06/2025) at the Collegium Helveticum, the Swiss Institute for Advanced Studies, and at the Institute of Neuroinformatics (INI, ETHZ & UZH). In 2025, he was appointed Associate Professor at the Department of Physics at the University of Crete. He held postdoctoral research positions at the Swiss Light Source, Paul Scherrer Institute (2011–2015), the Institute of Condensed Matter Physics, ÉPFL (2010–2011), and the Department of Physics, University of Konstanz (DE) (2009-2010). He was a visiting researcher at the Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, Japan (04–07/2008), supported by a fellowship from the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
