Non-contact friction in ultracoherent nanomechanical resonators near dielectric materials

Understanding loss mechanisms in nanomechanical resonators has enabled ultracoherent devices with improved sensitivity. Now these resonators are found to be sensitive to non-contact friction from nearby materials, thus limiting mechanical coherence.
