Neutron spectroscopy measurements combined with tensor network simulations have placed the long-studied quantum spin-chain compound CuGeO3 in a spontaneously dimerized phase predicted in 1982. In this system, fractionalized excitations evolve from nearly free spinons to tightly bound triplons across energy scales within a single spectrum.
